Information on Adopting an Animal
Please look at the Elderly Animal Scheme (EARS) section if you are interested in adopting an animal 10 years and over.
Adoption Procedures
- The animal appears healthy and can be adopted
- There is or has been a medical condition which does not require further treatment but that potential adopters would need to be made aware of. This would also be declared to the Insurance Company which provides the 4 weeks free insurance as part of the adoption.
- The animal has a condition which requires further investigation (e.g. blood tests/x-rays) or treatment and therefore is not available for adoption until further notice from the vet.
Dog Adoption Procedures (Excluding Elderly Animals)
To adopt an animal from us, you need to be over 18 years old.
1. You will be asked to complete an application form.
2. If you live in rented accommodation we will require written permission from the landlord before being able to view any dogs to you.
3. We will require to see vaccination cards for existing pets, and also ask that your existing pet is neutered.
4. We don't have kennels open to walk round, instead we have a photo book to give you an idea of the dogs we have available. Any dogs that may be suitable and you are interested in, will be shown to you by a member of staff. This is usually done in the waiting room, unless the dog isn't fully vaccinated.
5. If you see a dog you would like to rehome, we shall place a reserve on that dog. All members of the household need to see the dog, including dogs.
6. A home visit will be carried out when you have reserved a dog.
7. You will be required to attend a pre-adoption talk, which will be arranged at the time of reservation.
8. The dog will have a health check by the vet before leaving the kennels.
9. Once the dog has been checked, and on passing your home visit, we will make an appointment with you to complete the adoption paperwork. Please keep to the time given as paperwork will have been prepared for then.
10.The adoption fee for a dog is £100. The adoption fee includes the following:
Initial vaccinations, Flea & worm treatment, Identichipping, Neutering, Health check, 4 weeks free insurance, Identity disc.
The purpose of a home visit
Home visits are carried out in accordance with RSPCA Headquarters guidelines.
A Home visit is carried out once you have placed a reserve on a dog. Your details will be passed on to a home visitor, who will then contact you to arrange a convenient time to see you.
A visit in your own environment is much more relaxing than the viewing process at the animal home. You may have thought of questions once you have left the animal home, which the home visitor may be able to help you with. We do ask to see all the family, including children, at the home visit, as different queries may be asked by different age groups and having an understanding at an early stage is important to ensure

Cat Adoption Procedures (Excluding Elderly Animals)
To adopt an animal from us, you need to be over 18 years old.
1. You will be asked to complete an application form.
2. If you live in rented accommodation we will require written permission from the landlord before being able to view any cats to you.
3. We will require to see vaccination certificates for existing pets, and ask for them to be neutered.
4. A member of staff will take you to the cattery and show the cats we have available for re-homing. There will also be other cats in the cattery, but they may already have homes waiting for them, and these will not be shown.
5. Please note it is our policy not to re-home kittens/cats as house (indoor only) cats, we would only re-home cats to this environment if they have previously been kept as a house cat or have a medical condition which prevents them from being safe outdoors.
5. If you see a cat you would like to rehome, we shall place a reserve on that cat. All members of the household need to see the cat and agree before adoption.
6. If the cat came into us as a stray, we will need to keep it in the cattery for 7 days, in case an owner comes forward to claim it.
7. The cat will have a health check by the vet before leaving the cattery.

10. The adoption fee for a cat is £65. If you adopt 2 cats there could be a discount on the adoption fee. The adoption fee includes the following:
Initial vaccinations, Flea & worm treatment, Identichipping, Neutering, Full health check, 4 weeks free insurance, Identity disc.
